Leopard 10.5.3 Now Hackintosh’d!

May 29th, 2008

Apple / Mac

It happened in a matter of hours from its official release from Apple, Mac OS X 10.5.3, the latest major release of Leopard has been hacked to run on your average PC using a special kernel to bypass special restrictions. Major build releasers such as JaS and Kalyway have already put out Combo Updates which will convert your Hackintosh to the latest version of Mac OS X Leopard which introduces a bunch of new features including upgraded drivers, over 200 bug fixes, and a new 9.3.0 kernel.

Files are currently being downloaded from various popular torrent sites including bay of plundering and green little demon. You know what I mean! I’ll post my success (or failire) of upgrading my current 10.5.2 Kalyway Hackintosh to the latest 10.5.3 using the now widely available 10.5.3 Kalyway Combo Update that hit the green this afternoon…

UPDATE!

It all works, smooth as glass. Just follow Kalyway’s instructions and be sure that you don’t have any old kernel boot entries in your /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. My kernel went from “tohkernel” (Old 9.2.0, from my 10.5.2 Combo Update), to “mach_kernel” (9.3.0, included in 10.5.3 Combo Update) and I set to timeout to 5 seconds because I hate waiting. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the below screenshot is money in the bank. At least for me.

First Boot With Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update

    Thanks Richard,

That’s great news. If you would like for me to add my machine to the list of Betas let me know. It’s a custom build and I’ll gladly share specs if you are interested.

Mac OS X releaser “JaS” is working on an SSE2 install DVD for Leopard. While I’ve been unable to get his beta to run on a 400MHz FSB, he has had success with 10.5.3 on everything down to a 1.8GHz P4 (SSE2). I will be posting it here as soon as it is released as I’m beta testing his release with a few different SSE2 machines, including a Dell Poweredge 400SC (2.8GHz P4 HT), a Compaq Evo D500 (1.8GHz P4), and a Dell Dimension 2400 (2.6GHz Celeron).

I’ll keep you guys posted in the coming weeks of this release.

    Hey Richard,

Any luck on those SSE2 Kernels? I’m new to the Mac scene and I am trying to get a version to work with some older hardware to make sure I like it before purchasing a whole new rig for my Mac machine. I’ve currently been reading lots of forums and have tried both Kalyway 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 both with reboot issues immediately before (or at least what I think is) the installer screen.

I would love to get my hands on a modified kernel that made my newbie install a little easier until I get a handle on all of the kext files etc.

Let me know if you have had any progress or if you might be able to share some words of wisdom for older SSE2 only machines.

    Thanks,
    Jonas

    Anonymous,

You’re going to want to select the hacked kernel, not vanilla, to boot your Intel Pentium 4 (SSE3). I have a SSE3 Prescott Celeron and I’m using it.

Be sure to take the DVD (or CD, if you’ve grabbed the multi-disc version) out of your computer before you press F8 and run ‘update -v’. Once run, it will go through the normal process and reboot itself into a working installation. It doesn’t get much easier if you just follow the instructions in the archive.

So, first time, I got stuck on spinning wheel…Reinstalled system. Just to clarify for myself..I’ve got a P4 with SSE3 (Prescott), so i select the modbin kernel?

For those with post-installation issues: i had the same ‘PCGenUSBEHCI’ problems and also the problem where, in the GUI, the loading icon would appear but never actually load. For me this appeared to be a problem with RAID and AHCI. I wont pretend to know what i’m talking about, but disabling RAID in my bios fixed the issue. Afterwards I simply ran an update -v and 10.5.3 booted right up

Hi, just wondering how to go about this. IU am using a Dell Optiplex 755, and installed Kalyway 10.5.2 without much problem (no sound and no internal network card, and this being a quad core machine it only reports to be a dual core).

Is this where the Kernel comes in?! Which one should I be using?!
    Any help much appreciated…

    alex,

Try running ‘update -v’ again, and if it keeps spinning, keep it on there for about 15 minutes then boot as normal (follow the instructions) and it should work.

Please note that this does not work correctly under an SSE2 CPU as it states. Please run CPU-Z to determine your CPU type (Windows) before you install. I am working on testing a few different SSE2-specific releases of 10.5.2 and 10.5.3 for the older PC’s which will include most Pentium 4 and Pentium 4 Mobile chips.

    Stay tuned! :-)

I´m currently using Kalyway mac os x 10.5.2.
I tried to install the released Mac os X 10.5.3 combo update, however, after my two tries the video driver looks like no compatible anymore.
I just got a zebra like screen. Unfortunately the update did not work on my 945GM intel on board.
    The 10.5.2 works just fine.
I have tried to install only the main file without the kernel update. I´m using the Vanilla 92. The problem was the same, loose the video drive I guess.

Hi! I have a problem after update, didn’t restar, first install kernel.pkg. ’til then everything was ok.
Restart normally with -v but now there’s a yellow alert that says “failed to load extension com.orByte.driver.PCGenUSBEHCI” and something else I don’t remember.
Restart again, now with -v -x, now there’s just that alert of the com.orByte.driver.PCGenUSBEHCI.
I have an Asus P5K-E WIFIAP motherboard. I try this over a fresh install of Kalyway 10.5.2 with vanilla kernel and EFI on a GUID partitioned SATA drive set to AHCI. Everything was working fine, Audio, LAN, Video was 8800GTS 320MB with GFX string working well. If anyone can help me…

I’m lost here. Try boot from DVD ROM and repairPermissions but didn’t workout. Forgive my english, I speak spanish.

    Jenderal,

This sounds like a corrupted installation or bad DVD. Try launching without “update -v” and see if your normal kernel panics as well.

Hello, perhaps I’m just dense and its ok to say so, I’ll probably agree after the debacle I put myself through. But for us newbie OSX users who have crawled out of the dungeons of torture in the windows world I just wanted to clarify one piece of the instructions. It was a crucial thing I was missing. Kalyway’s command instructions are dead on, however where those commands are inputed is another thing entirely. First, I’ve only been able to see the F8 option when the CD is in the drive and striking it then will boot you to a prompt on the disc not the HD. During normal HD booting just hit any key to get to the “boot:” prompt. You don’t get a “Root” prompt. I relied on the little bit of unix commands I could remember to get to an actual bash prompt with -s which funny enough did produce a “root” prompt. However that was way further than I needed to go. Simply inputing Kalyways “update -v” at the “boot:” prompt got everything up and running. I know this sounds like a total “Duh” moment but I’m completely bald and was still finding hair to tear out. Just thought I’d contribute.

    godey,

I had the same problem as you and fixed it by replacing the new nvidia files with the ones from 10.5.2.

The file are GeForce*.kext and NVD*.kext

    Hope this helps.

    godey,

I’m not sure. I’d search the Apple-related forums for information on how to uninstall a Combo Update. The legitimate and official instructions should work for Kalyway’s 10.5.3 Combo Update. If you find what you’re looking for, feel free to post it here for the real Mac users, too.

Hi. I’ve successly install Kalyway 10.52. on a XFX nForce 680i LT SLI motherboard with a Duo 2 Quad 6600 processor, 2gb of ram and a Gforce 7300gs video card. I’m using IT for FCP. I want to fix a problem before I upgrade to 10.5.3. If I boot with all 4 cores the mouse freeze after a few minutes of inactivity but other process seem to continue to work such as a CPU test, back ground screens etc. When I boot using only 2 cores it works like a charm and never freezes. Any ideas for a fix? Thanks.

Hi there,I’ve installed the upgrade without a glitch on the kalyway 10.5.1 and then I went to the Apple
website just to check for more updates without downloading them.On rebooting just after the BIOS screen faded away I’ve got an very strange error message:”ERROR:CPU fan has failed.PC will automaticlly power down in a few seconds.Service PC imediately to prevent danger to CPU.”Since then
the machine won’t boot and switches off again and again. It’s a ASUS P5LP -LEontine.INTEL core2 duo
    E6420 2.13GHz.INTEL 945G.GEFORCE 7500LE.Realtek 8169,this board is used on HP Pavilion Media
Center m8080 here in Europe. The way the error message is written one can be pretty sure that it’s not\from from the manufacturer.I’ve changed the fan but the problem won’t go away.
I would appreciate any help and may God bless you all! Thanks a lot.

I don’t use iPhoto so I’m not certain. This is the first mention of iPhoto being broken that I know about so maybe it’s an isolated issue.

j, SSE2 support is unknown at this time for 10.5.3 (Kalyway). Maybe try a different release?

This is from Kalyway’s README on the 10.5.3 Combo Update:

kalyway hackintosh10.5.3 combo update for sse3 intel only !

    READ Carefully !!!!

    1- install comboupdate ! don’t restart !

2- install kalyway kernel pkg ! choose kernel you need for your pc ! (if you want keep your old 9.2 kernel so install this pkg without selecting 9.3 kernel !!!)

3- reboot and type update -v and cross the fingers !

if you stuck at bsd root after reboot ! so type “update -v” without quote at f8 darwin prompt ! it should work !

caution : you may experienced boot problem related to gfx card ! especially with 7xxx nvidia series and ati ! if happen type -v -x

try this update at you own risk !!!!

Ok, installation went good but I’ve got some strange problems.
QE not working, I wented back to 10.5.2 with the Kalyway Leopard DVD.
But still no QE. (I use a 8400GS on my hackintosh)
Then I had another problem: Safari and Disk Utility (maybe some other programs too) wouldn’t start. I’ve copied these from my macbook with official 10.5.3, now they work again.

I only need to correct the Quartz Extreme and Core Image acceleration. Time to use these GFX strings I think :-)
