Leopard 10.5.3 Now Hackintosh’d!

May 29th, 2008

Apple / Mac

It happened in a matter of hours from its official release from Apple, Mac OS X 10.5.3, the latest major release of Leopard has been hacked to run on your average PC using a special kernel to bypass special restrictions. Major build releasers such as JaS and Kalyway have already put out Combo Updates which will convert your Hackintosh to the latest version of Mac OS X Leopard which introduces a bunch of new features including upgraded drivers, over 200 bug fixes, and a new 9.3.0 kernel.

Files are currently being downloaded from various popular torrent sites including bay of plundering and green little demon. You know what I mean! I’ll post my success (or failire) of upgrading my current 10.5.2 Kalyway Hackintosh to the latest 10.5.3 using the now widely available 10.5.3 Kalyway Combo Update that hit the green this afternoon…

UPDATE!

It all works, smooth as glass. Just follow Kalyway’s instructions and be sure that you don’t have any old kernel boot entries in your /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. My kernel went from “tohkernel” (Old 9.2.0, from my 10.5.2 Combo Update), to “mach_kernel” (9.3.0, included in 10.5.3 Combo Update) and I set to timeout to 5 seconds because I hate waiting. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the below screenshot is money in the bank. At least for me.

I instaled Kalyway 10.5.2 without problems, then after I tried the combo update I rebooted
and my screen is divided in two, right half black, left half part of the Mac os desktop, I guess it has something to do gith the graphics kext.

Does anyone knows how to fix it? I’m running Dell 1525, Dual core 2 duo, Chipset GM965
    3D Accelerator GMA X3100

Huge leap forwards yesterday as I FINALLY got the battery meter working! Not sure what I did wrong when trying all the various methods that are floating around, but I finally worked out the necessary versions of the necessary kexts/bundles from various forums and got it working!

So, if you want to have a go at this, here’s a step-by-step of what I did. Now, I must point out that this may not work for you and could possibly screw your installation, so BACKUP with TimeMachine (or whatever) before you try it. My laptop is a Dell 1525, bought in the UK in January 2009. I got this working on XxX 10.5.6, so I don’t know if it will work on anything other than XxX 10.5.6, but I imagine it will (well, you’re going to backup anyway, right?).

I’ve uploaded the necessary files to a website, as, after all the various forums I visited, I can’t actually remember where I got them. In fact, they may well be the same ones as Richard’s, but I don’t have time to compare them.

    1. Download PowerManagement.bundle.tar (version 136.0.0) from here: http://www.swampfoetus.net/downloads/PowerManagement.bundle.tar
    2. Download AppleACPIPlatform.kext.tar (version 1.1.0) from here: http://www.swampfoetus.net/downloads/AppleACPIPlatform.kext.tar.
    3. Extract both of the above files (double-click them in finder).
    4. Start a Terminal session.
    5. Type “sudo su –“ and enter your root password to become the root user.
    6. Type “cd /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/”
    7. Type “mv PowerManagement.bundle PowerManagement.bundle_backup” i.e. take a backup.
    8. Copy in the one you downloaded at step 1, so, depending on what user you downloaded the file as, type “cp –R ~/Downloads/PowerManagement.bundle ./” Here, should be replaced with the username you download the file as.
    9. Type “cd /System/Library/Extensions/”
    10. Type “mv AppleACPIPlatform.kext AppleACPIPlatform.kext_backup” i.e. take a backup
    11. Open KextHelper and drag-and-drop the downloaded AppleACPIPlatform.kext into it.
    12. Open Disk Utility and click “Repair Disk Permissions”. (I got a load of “…permissions differ…” messages and ignored them.)
    13. Reboot with –v –f
    14. Open System Preferences and go to Energy Saver. Fingers crossed, you should have a load of new stuff in this window. Click the Options tab and tick Show battery status in the menu bar.

Well, I really hope this works for you. Let me know your successes.

I’m posting this to all the blogs, as Batter Meter problems are mentioned in all of them.

P.S. It’s my birthday tomorrow so, as a gift, could someone get my hibernation working? It’s the only thing left that I need working!

I will be posting it here as soon as it is released as I’m beta testing his release with a few different SSE2 machines, including a Dell Poweredge 400SC (2.8GHz P4 HT), a Compaq Evo D500 (1.8GHz P4), and a Dell Dimension 2400 (2.6GHz Celeron).

I’ll keep you guys posted in the coming weeks of this release.

    Hi Richard

I have a Dell Poweredge 1600SC and i’m pretty interesting in hearing anything about your 400SC. The problem is that my drives are on a RAID card … and I dunno if i’ll be able to install Hackintosh on it.

    Any ideas?

Never got very far with the Dell workstations, though the Compaq Evo did *somewhat* work — it was nothing amazing. no QE/CI, very slow, etc. I’m eager to see how your “SC” turns out. Feel free to keep me updated, send pictures, etc. :-)

Always keep a backup of your kernel. I keep several different kernels on my laptop for various testing and debugging reasons. To back up your existing kernel, open Terminal and type ‘sudo su -’ then enter your user password. Now type ‘cd /’ and if you know your kernel name, type ‘cp kernel_name kernel_backup_name’ and you’re in business.

    MacBook-Pro:/ root# ls -lah|grep mach

RichardIt sounds like you’re booting with the wrong kernel. Always create a backup of your “old” working kernel to boot from in a situation like this.

This is a fresh install of Kalyway 10.5.2, then updating it immediately to 10.5.3. so i do not have a working kernal that i was using before.
when i updated using the vanilla kernal, i kept getting an error that would not start OSX. when i installed the other kernal that is given, everything is working except for the menu’s populating with their options.
Do i need to backup a kernal on 10.5.2 before i update to 10.5.3? if so, how do i do this? thank you for your help Rich!!

I am having a problem once i install the 10.5.3 Update successfully using the other kernal (not vanilla) that is given with the update. This update is on a fresh, formatted copy of 10.5.2 and i keep getting this error. I am unable to see ANY of my menus on the top left. under FILE, EDIT, VIEW, EVERYTHING, i am unable to see anything. i can still click on the menu and it will select the item that is there, however the menu appears blank and you cannot see any menu options. Please help, is this something that is wrong with the Kernal? or kext? please advise cause your help will be greatly apprecaited.

Hi there – finally took the plunge to upgrade to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2 as I have got Spore and it needs 10.5.3. Ran update, chose modbin kernel and rebooted. Now my network card is showing as cable disconnected even though it ain’t and the light is on…….very odd. For ref I have a Dell Optiplex 320 which worked absolutely flawlessly on 10.5.2. If anyone know how to get this resolved please let me know!
    Cheers

    Hi
I am trying to install kalyway 10.5.2 on my Sony Vaio VGN-CR35G (T8100 processor, 2 GB Ram, ATI Radeon Mobility X2300, Intel 4965, Bluetooth, Realtek Sound, Sony built-in webcam, Texas Instruments PCIxx12 card reader, connexant modem) on USB Flash disk. Had to install many times due to some goof ups by me. The problem faced are:
    1. No wifi support at all.
    2. Graphics only 1024 X 768
    3. Sometimes sound card is detected and sometimes not. When sound card is detected, no mike
    4. TI PC Card reader not detected at all
    5. HP PCMCIA Bluetooth mouse is detected, but not connected sometimes.
    6. Web cam not detected at all.
    7. Only one core is detected.

Any Help will be highly appreciated.

    Everything solved!

After some time the problem was solved automatically…. I used the command . update -v . a couple of times and at last (I believe after the third boot) everything became normal.

      Outstanding! :-)

I’m in the process of ordering parts for my next Hackintosh. Core2 Duo build with all the goodies for under $300 shipped and I’m not talking about third rate parts. More to come on that in my next blog posts.

    Thanks for quick reply Richards!.

What I’ve done was Install: Kalyway 10.5.2 for Intel SSE3 only

Worked excellent and even installed automatically the EFIv8

Afterwards I installed Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update with modkernel (NOT the Vanilla one) . What happened afterwards was that>

1st: monitors starts showing very rapidly HFs+ …. HFS+.. HFS+ ..etc (like the movie Matrix)
then 2nd: the matrix stops and starts showing yellow warnings like something not loaded…. etc..(something like autorecover)
then 3rd: goes normaly and enter leopard as if nothing happened.

The matter is a bit annoying so if you just got any sugestion would be great (is it possible to recover my 9.2.0 kernel or it is better to stay with my 9.3.0)….. Apart from that everything runs smoothly

    Francisco,

EFI isn’t a requirement. You can continue to use your own hacked kernel or the supplied hacked mach_kernel to bypass EFI and boot your Pentium D computer.
